Crusader Offense Comes Through in Victory over Rockhurst

NASHVILLE, TENN. – The Belmont Abbey baseball team put together its strongest offensive performance of the season as the Crusaders continued its road trip with a 23-2 victory over Rockhurst Friday at Trevecca Nazarene University. The 23 runs is the most that The Abbey has scored in a single game since bringing 22 runs across the plate in a 22-16 win over Barton March 15, 2019.

Adam Overcash was one of the top hitters for Belmont Abbey, finishing 3-for-4 and driving in six runs for the afternoon. He was one of three Crusaders to record three hits for the game along with Ben Ferguson and Sean Johnson.

Belmont Abbey moved to 6-1 on the season while Rockhurst is 0-1 after playing its season opener.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Alex Sniffen got the Crusaders started on a good note by retiring the first seven batters he faced. He finished his start by allowing two runs on three hits to go with eight strikeouts and four walks in five innings.
  • Overcash drove in the first three runs of the game thanks to a bases-clearing double to right-center field in the bottom of the first inning.
  • The Crusaders followed that with a six-run second inning highlighted off by a grand slam by Zach Aehlert.
  • Ferguson hit his third home run of the season with a solo home run in the third inning followed by another RBI single from Overcash. The Abbey led 12-0 after the first three innings.
  • Overcash added a two-run home run in the fifth to extend the lead and two more runs came in with consecutive walks with the bases loaded drawn by Quinten Masciarelli and Ben Gobbel.
  • Belmont Abbey added a pair of runs in the seventh on another bases loaded walk and an error.
  • The Crusaders capped the scoring with five runs in the eighth.
  • Evan Campbell, Andrew Glauber and Justin Reid finished the game off on the mound with a combined four scoreless innings.
