BELMONT, N.C. – Sophomore forward
Abigail Crain led the Belmont Abbey women's basketball team with a game-high 22 points against Anderson Monday evening against Anderson at the Wheeler Center.
The Crusaders erased a 12-point deficit in the final three minutes of the game but the Trojans hit a game-winning jump shot with three seconds remaining to earn the 63-61 win.
Trailing 59-47 with 3:07 remaining in the game, Belmont Abbey went on a 14-2 run and tied the game with 16 seconds remaining on a jump shot from
Riley James. James was one of three Crusaders to finish in double figures with 12 points.
Taylor Stelley also had 10 points to go with eight rebounds.
Belmont Abbey falls to 2-3 on the season while Anderson is now 4-3 overall.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Both teams battled back and forth in the first half with Anderson taking a 15-12 after the first quarter before Belmont Abbey came back to tie the game at 25-25 entering halftime.
- The Crusaders took their first lead of the game at 17-15 with 6:53 left in the second quarter thanks to a layup by Crain.
- Belmont Abbey trailed by 10 late in the third quarter before a 9-2 run to close the period but the Crusaders back within three entering the final 10 minutes.
- The Crusaders also faced double-digit deficits on three separate occasions in the fourth quarter.
- The rally started with a pair of free throws from Stelley and Belmont Abbey forced turnovers on three straight Anderson possessions.
- Crain scored six of the final eight points for Belmont Abbey to help the Crusaders rally back. It is the second time this season that Crain has surpassed 20 points for the game. She also fininshed with six rebounds.
- Additionally, Belmont Abbey went a season best 16 of 17 from the free throw line against the Trojans, including a perfect 11 for 11 in the fourth quarter.
- The Crusaders' 21 forced turnovers against the Trojans was also a season high. They also had eight steals, including three from Cate Scheiber.
- Catherine Hendershott was the first Crusader to reach double figures in rebounds this season, collecting 10 boards to go with her eight points.

- The Crusaders step back into Conference Carolinas play with a pair of road games this week starting Wednesday at 5 p.m. at Southern Wesleyan. The trip continues with a contest at Francis Marion at 2 p.m. Saturday in Florence, S.C.
- The Abbey will return to the Wheeler Center Dec. 10 against Lees-McRae at 2 p.m.
