BELMONT, N.C. – The Belmont Abbey women's basketball team earned its second straight win at home Saturday as the Crusaders prevailed for a 47-38 victory over visiting Newberry at the Wheeler Center. Belmont Abbey was able to pull away late thanks to some timely defense and key baskets in the fourth quarter.
The Crusaders held the Wolves without a point for the final 6:34 of the contest and Cate Scheiber scored nine of her 12 points in the fourth quarter with three 3-pointers. The pivotal one came with 2:37 left in the game for Belmont Abbey's final made basket of the game.
Belmont Abbey improves to 2-2 on the season while Newberry falls to 2-4.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Catherine Hendershott finished as Belmont Abbey's leading scorer with 15 points to go with four rebounds and two assists.
- Taylor Stelley also finished in double figures with 10 points. She also had three rebounds.
- The Crusaders took a 14-7 lead at the end of the first quarter thanks to an 8-2 run during the closing stretch of the quarter.
- The Crusaders forced 19 turnovers from the Wolves in the win.
- Hendershott's free throws with 7:16 left in the first half gave Belmont Abbey an 18-7 lead. The 11-point lead was the largest margin
- Saturday's game marked the second straight game the Crusaders held their opponent to under 40 points. It was also the second straight game that Belmont Abbey led wire-to-wire.
- Katherine Bischoping led the team with seven rebounds.
