Wenzel’s Overtime Winner Lifts Crusaders Past Limestone

BELMONT, N.C. – Kaylee Wenzel scored a game-winning goal with less than two minutes left in the first overtime period to give the Belmont Abbey field hockey team a 2-1 victory over Limestone Wednesday in a South Atlantic Conference game at Alumni Field.
 
The Crusaders were able to rally from an early deficit to defeat the Saints for the first time in program history.
 
The win was also the fourth victory in the last five contests for Belmont Abbey as it moved to 8-6 overall and 7-3 in South Atlantic Conference play. Limestone moves to 5-10 overall, 4-7 in the league.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Crusaders came out with several good chances early in the game with five shots in the first quarter, three of them on target.
  • The Saints got on the board late in the first half with a goal following a penalty corner.
  • Meadoe Harrell-Alvarez pulled the Crusaders even at 1-1 just over two minutes into the second half. It was the fourth goal of the season for the senior.
  • Additionally, Harrell-Alvarez finished with the team lead with five shots and two on target.
  • Samantha Moore also had two shots on target for the Crusaders.
  • The Crusaders out-shot the Saints 16-7 in regulation.
  • The Abbey withstood a furious rally defensively from Limestone, facing six shots during the period.
  • Wenzel found the cage from close range off an assist by Isabella Grasso. It was the second straight game with an assist from Grasso.
  • Chloe Parker made three saves for Belmont Abbey.
  • Belmont Abbey held a 10-5 advantage in penalty corners over Limestone.
MILESTONES REACHED
  • The victory also marked the first time in program history that Belmont Abbey reached seven wins in conference play.
  • Additionally, the win also ensures that the Crusaders will finish conference play with a winning record. The team also accomplished that feat in 2018.
  • Belmont Abbey also clinched a home playoff game in the first round of the South Atlantic Conference Tournament. Time, date and opponent will be announced at a later date.
 
UP NEXT
  • The Crusaders will play their final home game of the regular season against No. 8 Converse at noon Saturday at Alumni Field.
  • Four seniors will be honored prior to the game.
