BELMONT, N. C. -- Goose Andrews scored a pair of goals, one in each half, lifting fifth-seeded Belmont Abbey to a 2-0 over No. 8 seed Chowan in the first round of the 2022 Conference Carolinas Women's Soccer Championship.
With the win, the Crusaders (9-7-2) advance to a Saturday matchup at No. 4 Lees-McRae in the quarterfinals. Game time is 2 p.m. in Banner Elk.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After dodging a bullet in the first minute on a Hawks shot just over the crossbar, The Abbey immediately responded at the 1:51 mark. Andrews took a pass from Anna Richard on the left side and slotted it home.
- The Crusaders had several chances to double the lead later in the half, finally making it 20 at the 56:16 mark. Andrew received a pass near the top of the box and dribbled through three defenders to convert the shot.
- Belmont Abbey held a 19-7 advantage in shots, including 11-2 on goal.
- The Crusaders took 10 corner kicks to Chowan's two.
- Lauryn Harding made two saves in registering her third solo shutout of the season. One of the saves came in the final 10 minutes of the match to preserve the shutout. Â
