GREENWOOD, S.C. -- Freshman
Kaylee Wenzel was the only player in five rounds of shootout to convert, lifting Belmont Abbey to a thrilling 3-2 victory over Lander in South Atlantic Conference field hockey Tuesday night. Wenzel entered the game third on the team in scoring with a goal and three assists.
The shootout win was the first in the seven-year history of the program as the Crusaders were on the short end of the result against Limestone Oct. 1, 2021 and vs. Shippensburg on Sept. 17 of this year.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Belmont Abbey twice held leads during regulation, only to see Lander equalize.
- Sydney Rossacci scored on a pass from Abigail Kane at 4:25 but the Bearcats tied the game at one just 33 before the first quarter ended.
- Meadow Harrell-Alvarez put the Crusaders up 2-1 with an assist from Casey Etter just over five minutes before halftime.
- But the Bearcats evened the score at 2-2 just 1:37 into the third quarter.
- The teams played the final 29:23 of regulation and 20 minutes of overtime scoreless.
- Lander outshot Belmont Abbey 23-9 overall and 13-7 on goal.
- Chloe Parker made 11 saves.
