Abbey Battles Lees-McRae in High-Scoring Contest

BELMONT, N.C. – The Belmont Abbey men's basketball team was locked in a back-and-forth battle against Lees-McRae Wednesday evening at the Wheeler Center.
Seven Crusaders reached double figures scoring but it was the Bobcats who eventually came away with the 118-113 victory.

LJ McCoy finished with a team-high 21 points, 14 of them coming after halftime. McCoy added four rebounds and three steals to his total as well.

The Crusaders surpassed the century mark scoring for the second straight game and the third time in the last four contests.

Belmont Abbey is now 8-7 overall and 6-5 in Conference Carolinas play while Lees-McRae is now 11-3, 8-2.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Both teams got off to a fast start offensively and Belmont Abbey took an early 7-4 lead thanks to a dunk by Mario Lacy, Jr. with 18:37 left in the half. He scored seven of the first 10 points of the game for the Crusaders.
  • Lacy recorded his fifth double-double of the season with 14 points and 12 rebounds. He also added a pair of blocked shots.
  • Ryan Maslow provided a spark of the bench for The Abbey, making three 3-pointers in the first half as part of his 12 points.
  • After trailing 58-53 late in the first half, Sean Halloran responded with his own 7-2 run to help the Crusaders pull even at 60-60 with 1:47 remaining.
  • Halloran had 18 points with three rebounds, two assists and two steals.
  • Belmont Abbey reached 60 points in a half for the second straight game, trailing 64-62 at the break.
  • The Crusaders were able to chip away at an 11-point second half deficit thanks to McCoy's 3-pointer with 2:28 remaining to pull even at 107.
  • Belmont Abbey shot 51.9 percent from the field and went 11-of-19 from 3-point range.
  • The Crusaders outrebounded the Bobcats 44-29.
  • Bosko Bojovic added 12 points and eight rebounds off the bench.
  • Quest Aldridge finished with 15 points a game-high eight assists while Chandler Baker had 11 points.
  • All 10 players scored for the Crusaders.

UP NEXT
  • The Crusaders close a three-game home stand against King at 4:30 p.m. Saturday at the Wheeler Center.
  • It will be the second meeting of the season against the Tornado. The two teams last faced off Dec. 15 in Bristol, Tenn.
