MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. --
Thomas Thierfelder won the Conference Carolinas 800 meter title in a photo finish Saturday afternoon, then returned two hours later to anchor the 4x400 team to another first-place finish, highlighting Belmont Abbey's participation at the 2021 Men's Track and Field Championship.
The efforts helped the Crusaders move up to sixth place in the final standings with 52 points.
Thierfelder finished the 800 in a time of 1:57.48, the same as runner-up Mattia Marci of Mount Olive. A photo analysis determined the times of 1:57.475 and 1:57:476, a difference of one-thousands of a second. The sophomore from Gastonia completed a double after winning the 800 at the Indoor Championships in February.
