BANNER ELK, N.C. - Belmont Abbey and Lees-McRae played to a 1-1 tie on Sunday in the front end of their Conference Carolinas Tournament quarterfinal home-and-home series. The draw sets up a winner-take-all scenario in the second leg, which will be played Sunday night at Alumni Field in Belmont, N.C.
The Abbey is now 3-1-4 on the year, while Lees-McRae is now 4-2-2.
For potential tie-breaking purposes in the series, the Crusaders won a penalty-kick shootout 3-2 with
Cassidy Calhoun converting the final attempt.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Crusaders came out shooting early, while the defense held the Bobcats to just two shots in the first 25 minutes of the contest
- At halftime, the teams were scoreless and had taken six shots each
- Goose Andrews got the Crusaders on the board first, on a pass by Logan Parry, in the 71st minute
- Lees-McRae scored in the 85th minute to force overtime.
- The Crusaders held the Bobcats to just one shot in the first overtime period. In the second session, The Abbey took four shots, while limiting the Bobcats to none.
- Lauryn Harding made five saves during the match.
- In the shootout, Lauryn Harding stopped two kicks. Tatiana Daugherty, Morgan Farrar, and Calhoun each scored on their tries
UP NEXT
- Belmont Abbey will host Lees-McRae next Sunday at 7 p.m.
- The winner advances to the semifinals. If the game results in another shootout, that winner would advance to the semifinals.
