CHARLOTTE, N.C. --
Abbey Playle and
Lauren Delisi scored goals during a dominant second quarter, leading Belmont Abbey to a 4-2 victory over cross-town rival Queens Friday afternoon in South Atlantic Conference Carolinas Field Hockey action.
The win marked the first ever in six visits to Bessant Field at the Queens Sports Complex. The Crusaders are now 2-0, while the Royals were playing their season opener.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Camryn Aiello opened the scoring 5:38 into the contest after a long cross from Meadoe Harrell-Alvarez midway through the first quarter, but Queens evened the score with 4:30 left in the period.
- In the second, the Crusaders took the first six shots on goal, converting twice. Delisi scored unassisted 3:39 in, then Playle took a pass from Angelina Perrone just over three minutes later for a 3-1 lead.
- After a scoreless third, Queens cut the lead in half on a penalty stroke, but The Abbey stayed strong with freshman Caroline Griffin adding some insurance with a rebound goal with 4:42 remaining.
- Julianna Smith, the reigning conference Defensive Player of the Week, made a career-high five saves in goal, including a pair in the final quarter.
- Queens held a 13-12 advantage in shots and took twice as many penalty corners (12-6).
