BELMONT, N.C. – Keyanna Spivey finished with 19 points and a career-high 16 rebounds to lead the Belmont Abbey women's basketball team to a season-opening 49-48 victory over Tusculum Friday at the Wheeler Center. Spivey scored 11 of the Crusaders' final 13 points in the fourth quarter, including a pair of go-ahead free throws with 5.2 seconds remaining in regulation. She also finished with two blocks and two steals.
The game was part of the season-opening South Atlantic Conference Carolinas Challenge.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Crusaders got off to a good start by taking a 16-7 lead after the first quarter.
- Jo Snow accounted for eight of the first 11 points of the game for the Crusaders and finished with 17 for the game to go with five rebounds and two steals.
- The Pioneers rallied back in the second quarter and took their first lead of the game at 19-18 with 5:42 left in the first half.
- The Abbey rallied to regain and hold a 25-22 lead at halftime.
- The third quarter turned into a defensive battle as the Crusaders held the Pioneers held to just two field goals in the period.
- Belmont Abbey was able to erase a three-point deficit in the final 1:10 of regulation.
- Kelli Thomas also finished with 12 rebounds for the Crusaders.
- Belmont Abbey forced 15 turnovers from Tusculum.
