MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. -
Abigail Kane broke what was a scoreless game two and a half minutes into overtime to help the Belmont Abbey Field Hockey team to a 1-0 win at Mount Olive this afternoon. The victory puts the Crusaders at 8-5 on the season, including a 6-4 conference record. The Trojans are now 5-7 overall, and 5-5 in conference play. The eight wins are a new single-season record for Belmont Abbey.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Abbey came out attacking early, taking two shots in the game's opening two minutes. Similarly, the defense did not give up a shot in the opening quarter
- The game remained scoreless at halftime, with the Crusader defense giving up just one shot the entire half
- The third quarter was also a defensive battle, with The Abbey not giving up a single shot in the period, though Casey Etter did get a shot off in the closing minutes of the quarter
- Neither team scored in the fourth, as the two defense-driven teams headed into overtime
- It only took Kane 2:34 into the overtime period to break the scoreless tie and give BAC the 1-0 victory
- On the day, Belmont Abbey outshot Mount Olive 5-3, and took four corners to the Trojans' three
- Chloe Parker made two saves in goal
