Box Score The Belmont Abbey women's lacrosse team earned a 19-5 victory this afternoon over North Greenville on its Senior Day. With the win, the Abbey increased its record to 10-6 on the season and 6-2 in conference play. North Greenville moved to 9-8 on the year with a 4-4 conference record.
It did not take long for the Abbey to score as Rebecca Luca found the net just 1:49 into the game. After a few minutes of the teams trading possessions, Caitlin Cook set up Rebecca Stromberg for a goal and a 2-0 lead at the 24:35 mark. The North Greenville Crusaders scored a free position goal at the 23:02 mark, but the Abbey's Crusaders responded with a goal of their own two minutes later. Belmont Abbey then went on an offensive surge with three goals in a span of 1:41, scored by Stromberg, Katelin Glass, senior Mackenzie Miller. Later in the half, at the 12:46 mark, Jordan Hofmeister found the back of the net off a pass from Glass to make the Abbey's lead 7-1. North Greenville scored at the 10:30 mark, and the Belmont Abbey Crusaders responded less than a minute later, as Stromberg scored off a Hofmeister pass. Just 22 seconds later, Luca put a shot in the net to give the Abbey a 9-2 lead. At the 5:40 mark, Cook scored another Abbey goal. It only took Madison Eberhardt 35 seconds to find Stromberg for a goal and an 11-3 lead. With 3:07 to play in the half, Cook earned her third assist of the day as she fed Luca a pass for a score. The Abbey led 12-3 at the half.
Cook received another assist on the Abbey's first goal of the second as she set up Stromberg for the second time in the game. NGU scored a goal at the 21:40 mark to make it 13-5. It was the last time the North Greenville Crusaders would score in the game. At the 18:56 point, Miller scored her second goal of the day off a pass from Hofmeister to make it a 14-5 Abbey lead. At the 9:40 mark, Miller scored her third goal of the day off a pass from Cook for a 16-5 Belmont Abbey advantage. Cook then set up Glass for a goal with 5:21 to play. Eberhardt found the net at the 3:40 mark, before Miller scored the final goal of the day with just under two minutes to play and the Abbey won the game 19-5.
On the day, Luca and Stromberg led the Abbey in scoring as they each recorded five goals on seven shots. Miller added four goals in her final regular season game at the Abbey. Cook handed out a game-high seven assists. Hofmeister dished out three.
Kassie Easter led the defensive effort with a game-high seven caused turnovers. Miller added four. Senior goalie Danielle Ruffalo earned two saves on the day and moved her record to 3-0 as the Abbey's stubborn defense limited NGU's shooting opportunities.
Belmont Abbey will host the Lees-McRae Bobcats on Tuesday, April 26 in a Conference Carolinas Tournament game.
