Crusaders Drop Heartbreaker in Conference Title Game

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. — Abbey McCarthy scored four goals and Addyson Greenspan scored three as the Belmont Abbey women's lacrosse team battled top-seeded Young Harris in the Conference Carolinas Championship game Saturday at the YHC Lacrosse Field. Belmont Abbey took an early lead but it was Young Harris who rallied for a 13-11 win over the Crusaders.

The start of the game was moved up to 11:30 a.m. due to inclement weather.

Young Harris is 15-5 and earns the automatic qualifier to the NCAA Division II Tournament after winning its first conference title. Belmont Abbey concludes the season with a 13-6 record.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Belmont Abbey got off to a fast start with Kimberleigh Hansberry and Katelyn Miller accounting for the first two goals of the game.
  • The Crusaders took a 6-2 lead at the end of the first quarter with two goals from McCarthy during that stretch.
  • The second quarter was a see-saw battle as Young Harris scored the first three goals of the quarter before the Crusaders answered with three straight goals to make it 9-5.
  • The Mountain Lions mad it 9-7 late but Greenspan scored a goal with 21 seconds left in the half to give Belmont Abbey a 10-7 halftime lead.
  • The Crusaders were shut out in the third quarter as Young Harris rallied to tie the game at 10-all entering the final 15 minutes.
  • Young Harris took the lead early in the fourth quarter before Greenspan scored her third goal to tie the game at 11-all.
  • Young Harris got two goals late to close out the contest.
  • Greenspan led the Abbey with nine draw controls.
  • Summer Eddinger made nine saves in goal for the Crusaders.
  • Triniti Cassidy had three ground balls and two caused turnovers for the Abbey.
