Box Score

Belmont Abbey dropped a very competitive Women's Lacrosse game at Catawba 12-11 in double overtime.  The loss put the Crusaders' record at 1-2.  It was the Indians' first game of the season.

In the opening minutes of the first half, the lead swung back and forth, as junior Katelin Glass found the back of the net for the first goal of the game four minutes into the contest.  The Abbey then responded to a Catawba goal when sophomore Rebecca Luca capitalized on a free position opportunity to give the Abbey a 2-1 lead.  Catawba then scored to tie the game at two, and Belmont Abbey responded just 53 seconds later with another goal by Luca for a 3-2 lead.

Later in the half, the Indians scored four straight goals to take a 6-3 lead.  The Abbey, however, did not give up as Erin Kunkel scored a goal with 7:36 remaining in the half to pull within 6-4, which was the score going into halftime.

The Abbey wasted no time in the second half, as Kunkel and Luca each scored a goal in the first four minutes to make it a 7-6 Catawba lead.  Later in the half, Catawba scored two straight goals to take a 10-7 lead with 9:05 to go.  The Abbey stormed back, scoring four goals in a span of 4:19, including a man-up goal by Luca.  This run gave the Crusaders an 11-10 advantage.  Catawba, however, scored a goal as time expired to force overtime.

In the first overtime, Belmont Abbey took the only shot of the period, as both teams played solid defense.  In the second overtime, Catawba scored with 48 seconds remaining on the clock to seal the win.

On the day, Luca led the Crusaders with five goals on just nine shots.  Kunkel contributed three goals on just four shots.  Glass scored two goals and handed out an assist.  Mackenzie Miller scooped up a team-high seven ground balls while Glass picked up six.  Goalie Annie Brannon recorded seven saves.

Belmont Abbey will next welcome Findlay on Saturday at 9:00AM.
