Women's Lacrosse Surges Past Florida Tech, 15-12

Belmont Abbey junior MacKenzie Miller scored four goals on six shots and Kassie Easter added three as the Crusaders women's lacrosse team snapped a two game losing streak with a 15-12 win over visiting Florida Tech this afternoon. Belmont Abbey is now 6-3, while the Panthers, a first year program, are 4-5.

The Crusaders never trailed as they opened up a 3-1 lead. The Abbey's first half lead rose to as high as 7-4 before Florida Tech's Mary Gormley found the back of the net with one second left to slice the Crusaders halftime lead to 7-5.

Belmont Abbey opened the second half on fire, scoring four of the first five goals, including the opening three. Jordan Hofmeister, Miller and Rebecca Luca fired home winners in the first seven minutes before the Panthers broke the string.

The Crusaders lead never dropped below two goals, which came after Florida Tech netted a pair, the last with 10:14 to go.

Belmont Abbey countered with goals from Luca and Easter, with Easter's goal on a free position, as the Crusaders lead grew to 14-10. 

The final stats showed the Crusaders holding the edge in shots (31-24), draw controls (22-5) and ground balls (33-25). 

Shanin Darley handed out four assists to go along with one goal. Katy Connery and Luca scored twice, Rebecca Stromberg, Molly Schaefer and Hofmeister each had one.

Connery won ten draw controls with five ground balls, while Stromberg won eight draw controls with six ground balls. Easter added four draw control wins with five ground balls.

The Crusaders caused eight turnovers as Emily Smith led the way with two. Reilly Johnson made eight saves in the cage.
