Box Score Belmont Abbey sophomore forward Cierra Skyers scored for the fourth-straight match and Maggie Moore and Theresa Mateo scored their first goals of the year as the Crusaders women's soccer team posted its fourth-straight shutout in a 4-0 home victory over North Greenville this afternoon.
Senior goalkeeper Hannah Kohls recorded her sixth shutout of the season as the Abbey improves to 6-5-2 overall and 5-2-0 in Conference Carolinas, while the North Greenville drops to 0-11-1 overall and 0-6-1 in Conference Carolinas.
Belmont Abbey dominated North Greenville from start to finish, outshooting its opponent 27-2 and attempting 11 corner kicks to just a pair for North Greenville.
Skyers, who during the pregame warmup was named the Conference Carolinas Player of the Week, stretched her goal scoring streak to four as she put the Abbey ahead 1-0 with just 3:14 gone by. After two Meghan Philp shots were saved, the second rebound came right to Skyers, who tapped in an easy goal from the face of goal for her eight marker of the year, and her seventh in conference play.
Shortly before the halftime whistle Mateo bagged her first goal of the year, as Robyn Hatcher ran down a long pass and stopped the ball just before it crossed the goal line in the right corner. She recovered and sent a cross to Mateo on the left side, and she tucked a shot from 15 yards out into the upper left corner to double the Abbey's lead.
12 minutes into the second half Moore recorded her first goal of the year as Skyers sent a through ball to the right side ahead of Moore, who ran down the ball and fired a low shot into the right corner for the score.
Kohls made two very easy saves in the net as she recorded her sixth shutout of the season.
Belmont Abbey is back in action Saturday at 1:00 when it welcomes Lees-McRae to Alumni Field.
