Mackenzie Miller and Katy Connery both scored four goals on six
shots and senior Lindsay Connolly handed out a career-high seven
assists as the Crusaders women's lacrosse team snapped a two game
losing streak with a dominating 18-3 win at Erskine this afternoon.
The win ups the Abbey's record to 6-7 overall and 3-2 in league
play, while Erskine falls to 5-10 overall and 1-7 in Conference
Carolinas.
The Crusaders outshot the Fleet 37-14 and won 17 of 22 draw
controls as they scored the first four goals of the game to put it
away early. After an Erskine goal with 21:23 left in the first
broke the string, the Abbey's momentum was merely halted as it
closed the half by scoring six unanswered markers to carry a 10-1
lead into the break.
In the first half alone, the Abbey scored ten goals on 23 shots
and held Erskine to just six shots while winning eight of 11 draw
controls.
Gina Colella opened the final period with a goal but it was
quickly matched by the Fleet. However, the Abbey scored seven of
the next eight goals to clinch the easy victory.
Miller and Connery both scored four goals on five shots. Miller
added two assists while Connery added one. Connolly's seven helpers
are a career-best while scoring three times. Colella and Megan
Patton netted a pair of goals, while Molly Schaefer, Reese Gassie
and Rebecca Diggs all had one.
Connolly's seven assists raises her season total to 39. Patton,
Schaefer, Christine Spellman and Ariel Walker all had one
assist.
Defensively, Lauren DiChiara caused three turnovers, while
Spellman, Walker and Meghan McSherry each had one. Connery and
Patton won five draw controls each, and goalkeeper Danielle
Ruffalo's six ground balls led all players. Ruffalo made two saves
before giving way to Claire Kaiser, who stopped five shots in the
final 5:35.
