Trailing 9-5 at the half, the Belmont Abbey women's lacrosse
team outscored Lenoir-Rhyne 7-4 in the second half, and the
Crusaders had a chance to tie the game at the buzzer, but Shannin
Darley's shot was saved by goalkeeper Ashley Gruning as the Bears
earned a 13-12 win this afternoon. Both teams are now 3-1 on the
year.
Lenoir-Rhyne outshot the Abbey 21-13 in the first half as it
built a 9-5 halftime lead, but the Abbey fought back in the second
half.
The final 30 minutes was played in an ice storm as turnovers
were contstant, as were goals. Lenoir-Rhyne scored the first three
goals of the half to build its lead to 12-5, but the Abbey charged
back with six unanswered goals in a seven minute span.
Rebecca Diggs, Elyse Mohn and Mackenzie Miller scored unassisted
goals in a minute span, followed by a Katy Connery strike off of a
feed from Lindsay Connolly which came 1:52 after Miller's strike,
and it made the score 12-9.
Three minutes later, Connolly netted a free position strike to
close the lead to 12-10, and one minute after that, Connery buried
an unassisted goal to close the gap to just one.
L-R stemmed the tide at the 4:54 mark as Mary Minick scored for
the fourth and last time. 46 seconds later, Connery scored again on
a free position, which dropped the Abbey's deficit back down to
one, but it turned out to be the last goal of the game.
The last minute was a whirlwind, as the Abbey had its last
chance to score with under five seconds left. The Crusaders set up
the offense, but Gruning stopped Darley at point blank range to end
the game.
