Trailing 9-7 at the half, the Belmont Abbey women's lacrosse
team outscored Queens 14-6 in the second half, scoring
nine-straight goals during one stretch, as the Crusaders earned a
21-15 non-conference win this afternoon at Alumni Field. The
Crusaders snap a three-game losing streak as they improve to 4-3,
while the Royals drop to 4-4.
Queens built a 9-7 halftime edge and improved it to 11-7 after
scoring the first two goals of the second half, but the Crusaders
fired back with nine unanswered tallies in a span of just 12
minutes. The goals came from Lindsay Connolly (2), Katy Connery
(2), Reese Gassie (2), Shannin Darley, MacKenzie Miller and Rebecca
Diggs. Gassie's second strike of the run, a man up goal, moved the
Crusaders ahead 16-11.
Brittany Barnwell momentarily halted the run with the last of
her four goals, but the Abbey fired right back with four straight,
as Connery, Gassie, Miller and Megan Patton all scored in the
flurry, which raised the Abbey's lead to 20-12.
Queens scored three of the last four goals of the game.
Connery led the Abbey with seven goals, while Connolly, Gassie
and Miller all netted three. Diggs, Patton, Darley and Lauren
DiChiara all finished with one, and the Abbey posted another on a
Queens own goal. Connolly posted three assists and Ariel Walker
collected one.
Connery added four ground balls and two draw control wins. Gina
Colella led the Abbey with three draw controls and seven ground
balls. Danielle Ruffalo made ten saves.
