Box Score The Belmont Abbey women's soccer team scored a goal in each half and the defense allowed just one shot en route to its sixth-straight shutout with a 2-0 win over the seventh seeded Limestone Saints this afternoon in the quarterfinal round of the 2013 Conference Carolinas Tournament.
The Crusaders are now 15-1-1 all-time in the round of eight as they improve to 14-3-1, while Limestone ends its season with a mark of 5-9-3. The Crusaders are now 20-1-3 against the Saints all-time.
With the win, the Abbey will host the winner of the North Greenville/Barton match Thursday afternoon at 2:00 p.m.
Belmont Abbey controlled the match from the start as it outshot the Saints 17-1. Sophomore Meghan Philp gave the Abbey the only goal it would need in the 18th minute. Ananda Gebreyesus unleashed a shot from the top of the box that Limestone goalkeeper Mariette Martinez caught, but as she went to the ground, the ball squirted out of her grasp and to her right, where Philp, who followed the shot, slammed home the rebound before Martinez could recover the ball. Philp's goal is her eighth of the year.
The Saints only shot nearly tied the match in the 35th minute. Katie Belser lifted a high screamer from 20 yards out that was headed for the top of the net, but Hannah Kohls tapped the ball over the crossbar at the last possible second to keep the Saints off the board.
Neither team had a scoring chance for the remainder of the half as the Abbey carried a 1-0 lead into halftime. The Crusaders outshot Limestone 10-1 in the frame.
Belmont Abbey attempted all seven shots in the final 45 minutes as Cassidy Coutinho sealed the match in the 74th minute. Martinez attempted to clear the ball out of the Saints zone, but her kick went straight up. She attempted to run the ball down, but Ananda Gebreyesus settled the ball and laid it off for Coutinho, who one-timed a beautiful 20 yard arcing rainbow that settled in the middle of the net, beating Martinez's retreating effort to swat it away by two steps for her fourth goal of the season.
Kohls posted her eighth clean sheet of the year and her sixth-straight as her goals against average dropped to 0.43 in the win.
