Box Score Belmont Abbey freshman forward Cassidy Coutinho scored for the
third straight match, tapping in the only goal of the match in the
49th minute, to lift the Crusaders women's soccer team past
Newberry 1-0 for the first win of the year. The triumph moves the
Abbey's record to 1-3-0, while Newberry is now 2-1-1.
The Crusaders controlled possession for most of the first half
and had several scoring chances but could not find the back of the
net, but shortly into the final period a pair of freshman combined
to put the Abbey on top.
Kaylee Akers gained possession deep into the Newberry zone down
the right flank and sent a through ball to the center of the box,
where Coutinho just got a foot on it just ahead of goalkeeper
Rebecca Darley. The ball squirmed underneath Darley, and Coutinho
bolted up quickly, raced to the mouth of the goal and tapped the
ball over the line unmarked for her third goal of the year.
The Crusaders had several chances to extend their lead, the best
coming on Alana Ryczek's header off of a corner kick that banged
off the inside of the crossbar in the 71st minute. Eight minutes
later, Megan Nanney sent a shot that also caromed off the
crossbar.
Belmont Abbey outshot Newberry 14-11 and held a 4-2 edge in
corner kicks. Darley made eight saves while Abbey goalkeeper Hannah
Kohls made three stops.
