The Belmont Abbey women's lacrosse team had its five game
winning streak snapped, falling to the nationally fourth-ranked and
top-seeded Limestone Saints 19-6 this afternoon in the Conference
Carolinas Tournament Championship match. The Crusaders, which won
six of its their last eight games, end the season with a mark of
9-7, while Limestone improves to 16-1.
Limestone led 8-1 at the half as it opened the contest with
three-straight goals. The run was interrupted by a Laura Dowd tally
with 14:11 to go, but the Saints closed the half with five
unanswered goals.
The second half scoring was one of periodic spurts by the
Saints, as they scored four straight to open the half. Lindsay
Connolly momentairly halted the run with her only goal of the game,
but Limestone countered with four unanswered strikes.
Elyse Mohn netted the first of her two at the 10:45 mark, and
after two Limestone scores, Mohn scored again, followed by two
straight from Megan Patton, the last of which came with 1:15 to go.
Limestone closed the scoring with 25 ticks left.
Mohn and Patton led the Abbey with two goals apiece, while
Connolly and Dowd added one each. Connolly handed out two assists,
while Dowd and Gina Colella added one each.
Defender Mary Frommling caused three turnovers and scooped up a
team-high four ground balls. Tory Morgan, one of three seniors
along with Dowd and Emily Hudgins, made 14 saves.
