Box Score The Mount Olive women's soccer team scored two unanswered goals,
the second of which coming on a golden goal by Janaya Finney just
six minutes into the extra session to earn a 2-1 Conference
Carolinas win this afternoon at Alumni Field. Mount Olive improves
to 6-8-1 overall and 5-4-0 in league play, while the Abbey, which
had its five match Conference Carolinas unbeaten streak snapped,
drops to 8-8-0 overall and 7-2-0 in league play.
Belmont Abbey outshot Mount Olive 11-7 as it struck first in the
31st minute. Ananda Gebreyesus laid the ball off for Kiera Woerner
from 20 yards out, where Woerner sped to the ball and one timed a
low, rapidlly paced shot that slipped just inside the right post
for her first goal of the year.
The Abbey maintained its lead through the rest of the half and
for most of the final stanza until the Trojans gained the equalizer
with just 2:46 left in regulation.
Tia Rose gathered a throw-in and lofted a high pass to the
center of the box, where Daisy Thomas outmuscled her defender and
tapped the ball just past Hannah Kohls and into the left corner of
the net to deadlock the match at one.
Neither team scored in the final two minutes to send the match
into overtime, where Mount Olive quickly scored the golden goal.
Ellie Barnes sent a high, arcing pass to the goal mouth, where
Finney beat her mark and just tapped the ball past Kohls for the
win.
Kohls made three saves for the Abbey, while Mount Olive
goalkeeper Carolin Edenhofner stopped six shots.
In addition to the shots advantage, the Abbey held a commanding
11-1 edge in corner kicks.
