The Belmont Abbey women's soccer team scored all three goals in
the first half in a 3-0 home victory over Erskine on Senior Day.
The win improves the Abbey to 11-7-0 overall and 11-2 in conference
play. With the loss Erskine drops to 6-10 overall and 5-7 in
conference play.
Rebecca Mateo started the scoring for the Crusaders with a goal
in the fifth minute of play for a 1-0 lead.. She looped in a high
arcing shot from the left side of the box over hte head of the
Erskine goalkeeper for the goal.
Nicole Voets finished two minutes later off the cross from Alana
Ryczek to bring the score to 2-0. Ryczek beat a defender down the
left sideline and crossed a left footed ball to the center of the
box, where Voets walled off two defenders and one-timed a tap in to
the lower right corner.
In the 24th minute Ryczek handed out another assist to Brandi
Clark who polished home a goal similar to Mateo's, flicking a high
shot from the corner of the box to cap the scoring.
The Crusaders dominated the match statistically as they outshot
Erskine 17-3, and edged the Fleet in corner kicks 4-3.
Hannah Kohls made three saves in the match to preserve the
seventh Abbey shutout of the season.
Prior to the match, seven seniors were honored. Senior Stephanie
Avila, who suffered a torn ACL earlier in the year and is not fully
recovered, started the match and came off just ten seconds in to a
standing ovation. Along with Avila, Mateo, Voets, Carly Kensinger,
Connie Axiotis, Elsie Hernandez and Alexa Hale were honored.
The Crusaders will be seeded third in the upcoming Conference
Carolinas Tournament, which begins Monday. The Abbey will host
either Queens or Pfeiffer, depending on the outcome of the
King/Converse match that begins at 7:00 p.m. If King wins, the
Abbey will host Queens. If Converse wins, the Crusaders will battle
Pfeiffer.
