Belmont Abbey freshman Elyse Mohn broke an 11-11 tie by scoring
the winning goal with 19 seconds left to vault the second-seeded
Crusaders past the third-seeded Queens University Royals 12-11 this
afteroon in the Conference Carolinas Tournament semifinal at the
Queens Sports Complex. The Abbey advances to the conference title
game for the third-straight year as it improves to 9-8, while
Queens ends its season at 7-10.
Queens took a 10-9 lead with 17 minutes left in the contest but
Crusader freshman Susan Killeavy knotted the contest at ten with
9:28 showing. Laurie Jordan put the Crusaders on top just over five
minutes later, but Queens's Kelley Duffey had an answer 22 seconds
after Jordan's goal to tie the game at 11.
With 1:35 left and the score still tied at 11, Abbey freshman
Rebecca Diggs caused a Duffey turnover and collected the ground
ball. The Crusaders set up the offense, and Jordan found a cutting
Mohn, who beat goalkeeper Rebecca Markle for her only goal of the
game with 19 seconds left. Lindsay Connolly won the ensuing draw
control as the Crusaders ran out the clock to advance to the title
game.
Belmont Abbey outshot Queens 34-30 as Jordan and Killeavy led
the way with three goals each, while Brianna Dignan and Emily
Hudgins both scored twice. Mohn and Kristyn Kinsey had one goal
each. Dignan led the Abbey with two assists, while Hudgins, Jordan
and Mohn all had one.
Natalie Crenshaw made six saves and collected a pair of ground
balls. Amanda Jones led the Abbey with five ground balls while Mohn
and Connolly both had four.
The Abbey led 7-6 at the half and both teams scored five times
in the final 30 minutes.
Belmont Abbey will face the top-seeded Limestone Saints for the
championship Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m.
