Women's Lacrosse Falls To Tenth-Ranked Gannon, 18-11

The Belmont Abbey women's lacrosse team fell to tenth-ranked Gannon by an 18-11 score this morning at Alumni Field. Gannon, ending its three-game spring break road trip, moves to 2-1, while the Abbey drops to 1-3.

Gannon outshot the Abbey 35-27 as Krista Schunk led all players with five goals, while Mary Eshenour and Taryn Millerd both had three. Kayla Nelson and Jess Fugate both had two, while Rachel DeCorla and Sarah Grzybinski had one each. Millerd and Nelson handed out two assists, while DeCorla, Eshenour, Fugate and Grzybinski all had one apiece.

Susan Kileavy led the Abbey with four goals, while Tara Chmil, Laurie Jordan and Emily Hudgins each had a pair. Brianna Dignan added one with a game-high four assists. Chmil, Jordan and Kileavy all had one assist.

Defensively, Gannon won the ground ball battle 28-24 as goalkeeper Acacia Cook led all players with six, while Fugate scooped up five. Chmil and Natalie Crenshaw both led the Abbey with five. Crenshaw made nine saves. Amanda Jones finished with five draw control wins, four caused turnovers and three ground balls.

The first half was played closely, as the Abbey scored the first three goals of the game, as Dignan scored the first followed by two from Kileavy. Gannon rallied with three-straight to knot the game at three, and both teams traded goals, followed by another from the Crusaders to give them a 6-4 lead. The advantage moved out to 7-5, but Gannon scored three unanswered to push ahead 8-7. Kileavy tied the game again with a goal at the 1:30 mark, but Schunk and Grzybinski closed the scoring to push Gannon ahead for good, with a 10-8 lead at the half.

The second half was all Gannon, as it outshot the Abbey 17-5 in the period, outscoring the Crusaders 8-3. Schunk had three of her five goals in the second half.
