East Stroudsburg erased a 9-8 Abbey lead by scoring the final
three goals in the last ten minutes to pull away from Belmont Abbey
and earn an 11-9 win this afternoon at Alumni Field. ESU moves to
2-0, while the Abbey falls to 1-5.
Belmont Abbey led 6-4 at the half as it erased a 4-1 deficit by
scoring five unanswered goals to close the half. In that run,
Brianna Dignan scored twice and Tara Chmil, Susan Killeavy and
Emily Hudgins tallied the others.
In the second half, ESU scored the first three goals to move
ahead 7-6, but Hudgins knotted the game at seven just a minute and
a half after East Stroudsburg moved ahead.
After Molly O'Hara scored for ESU to move it ahead 8-7, the
Crusaders answered with goals by Killeavy and Laurie Jordan to give
the Abbey a 9-8 advantage with 11:12 left.
East Stroudsburg responded with three unanswered goals, starting
with Lindsey Moyer's finish, her only goal of the game, that tied
the game at nine with 10:09 left. Just under four minutes later,
Kelsey Pfautz gave ESU the lead for good when she buried a free
position shot. Michelle Mangiaruga added an insurance goal at the
5:55 mark to salt the game away.
Mangiaruga and O'Hara led ESU with three goals, while Mangiaruga
added two assists. Jamie Wetztergom had two goals, while Moyer,
Pfautz and Ali Green had one each.
Dignan led the Abbey with three goals and two assists. Kileavy
and Emily Hudgins scored twice, while Jordan and Tara Chmil scored
one each.
East Stroudsburg outshot the Abbey 24-21, and the Abbey had the
advantage in ground balls by a 24-21 count. ESU dominated the draw
control battle 14-8 as Jennifer Kelly led all players with
four.
Goalie Natalie Crenshaw posted seven saves and had five ground
balls. ESU netminder Amanda Simms finished with eight saves.
