Belmont Abbey junior attack Tara Chmil led a solid Crusader
offense with five goals as the tenth-ranked Abbey women's lacrosse
team wrapped up the 2009 regular season with a 15-11 win over the
visiting Queens University Royals this afternoon at Alumni Field.
Belmont Abbey, winners of four straight and 11 of its last 13,
improves to 13-4 overall and 9-3 in Conference Carolinas, while
Queens falls to 4-12 overall and 3-8 in Conference Carolinas. The
Abbey's 13 overall victories and nine conference wins are new
school records for the four-year old program. The win also clinches
the second seed and a first-round bye in next week's Conference
Carolinas Tournament.
The Abbey outshot the Royals 35-16 as Chmil led all players with
five goals, while Meghan Darley added three. Samantha Hooker and
Kerri Gut both finished with two, while Brianna Dignan, Laurie
Jordan and Shannon Farden all had one. Dignan led all players with
four assists, while Jordan had two. Chmil, Farden, Gut, Hooker and
Laura Dowd all had one assist each.
Defensively, the Abbey won the ground ball battle 22-16 and
caused 11 turnovers as Amanda Jones led the way with three caused
turnovers. Hooker led all players with five ground balls while
Farden had four. Goalkeeper Kate Gavin made two saves and scooped
up three ground balls.
Queens was led by Kelly Wrightson and Alyssa Hughes, who both
had three goals, while Brittany Philip had two. Shannon Casey,
Carolyn Parsons and Caitlin O'Rourke each had one. Wrightson had a
pair of assists, while Philip and Brittany Weller both had one
each. Royals goalkeeper Rebecca Markle made 14 saves and had two
ground balls.
