Belmont Abbey sophomore forward Connie Axiotis scored a
career-high four goals as the Belmont Abbey women's soccer team
broke a 2-2 halftime tie with four second half tallies in a 6-2 win
over the visiting Barton Bulldogs this afternoon at Alumni Field
during homecoming festivities. The Abbey improves to 6-3-0 overall
and 5-1-0 in Conference Carolinas, while Barton falls to 2-7-1
overall and 2-3-1 in Conference Carolinas.
The Crusaders outshot the Bulldogs 20-5 as Axiotis, who scored
four goals on five shots, put the Abbey up 2-0 in the first 11
minutes. Her first tally came at 8:42 on an assist from Nicole
Voets, and the second, at the 11:00 mark, was a carom off of a
cross from Voets and Alana Ryczek.
Barton trimmed the lead to 2-1 just 16 second after Axiotis's
second goal, a Sarah Dice winner off of a feed from Dillon Sauls.
Shortly before the half, Hillary Peterson knotted the game at two
on a penalty kick.
The second half was all Belmont Abbey, outshoting the Bulldogs
11-1 as Axiotis found the back of the net twice more, the first at
the 56:34 mark off of a feed from Rebecca Mateo, and the second 15
minutes later on a blast to the far post.
Voets upped the lead to 5-2 at the 72:51 mark finding the back
of the net off of an assist from Mateo. Senior forward Celene
Molera closed the scoring with two seconds left in the match,
taking a pass from Alexa Hale and firing home a 30-yard shot for
the goal.
