Belmont Abbey, Georgia College And State Lead After First Round Of NCAA Super Regional

MOORESVILLE, NC-Georgia College and State University and Belmont Abbey College lead its respective regionals after the first round of the 2008 NCAA Atlantic/Southeast Super Regional, held at the par 72 Lake and Point Golf Club in Mooresville, North Carolina.

In the Southeast region, Georgia College and State posted a team score of 285 (-3) as Juan Bialet led the way with a three-under 69. He shares the individual lead with Newberry's Daniel Stanley. They hold a one-shot lead over Catawba's Allen Tuttle, who qualified for the regional as an individual. Seven players registered scores under par.

In the team standings, Georgia College and State holds an eight shot lead over Newberry (293) and a nine shot lead over Lander (294). Clayton State is fourth (296), while third-ranked South Carolina-Aiken (297) is fifth. Carson Newman (300), Columbus State (305) and Armstrong Atlantic (310) round out the field.

In the Atlantic region, Belmont Abbey holds a nine shot lead after posting a team score of 294 (+6). Sophomore Connor Tomlinson posted the low round of the day in the region, with a two under par 70. He posted four birdies and an eagle on te par five 12th. Sophomore Joe Campbell is in a tie for second, along with Jimmy Gilliam of Coker after both players fired an even par 70. They were the only three players who did not finish over par.

The Abbey holds a nine shot lead over Anderson, who posted a team score of 303. Coker is third with a score of 306. Barton is in sole possession of fourth place with a score of 307. Mount Olive and Fayetteville State are tied for fifth with scores of 311. Pfeiffer (313-7th) and Virginia State (321-8th) round out the Atlantic Region.

The second round of the Super Regional gets underway tomorrow morning at 8:00 a.m. with starts on the first and tenth tees. The winners of the two regions, and the next three lowest scores, regardless of region, advance to the NCAA National Championships in Houston, Texas next week.
