BELMONT, N.C. — After facing a halftime deficit, the Belmont Abbey women's lacrosse team rallied with six unanswered goals to start the second half as the Crusaders rallied to defeat Newberry 10-8 on a windy Wednesday at Alumni Field.
Five Crusaders tallied two goals on the day — including
Katelyn Miller and
Macy Lashells — who also had assists in the win.
Summer Eddinger got her fourth win of the season in goal for the Abbey and made eight saves along with six ground balls.
With the win, Belmont Abbey improves to 4-2 on the season while Newberry is 3-2.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Newberry jumped out to an early two-goal lead in the first quarter.
- Belmont Abbey's lone shot on goal in the first quarter came from Triniti Cassidy midway through the opening quarter.
- The Wolves got two more goals in the board before Cassidy scored on a free-position goal with 7:54 left before halftime to get the Abbey on the board.
- Belmont Abbey got within 5-2 thanks to a late goal from Addyson Greenspan.
- The Crusaders took control with six goals in the third quarter starting with the first of two goals from Miller.
- Lashells contributed on the next three goals for the Abbey, assisting on Greenspan's goal before adding the next two to put the Abbey ahead.
- Miller and Cassidy added two more goals to make it 8-5 heading into the fourth quarter.
- Newberry and Belmont Abbey traded goals in the fourth quarter with Emerson Sheyda scoring twice to help hold off the Wolves.
- The Crusaders out-shot the Wolves 27-22.
- Belmont Abbey finished with 22 ground balls and 11 draw controls.
- Eight Crusaders were credited with a caused turnover.
