Men’s Tennis Splits Matches Against Tusculum, LMU

Box Score 1 HARROGATE, Tenn. — The Belmont Abbey men's tennis team split a pair of matches in Tennessee Saturday as the Crusaders faced Tusculum and Lincoln Memorial Saturday at the LMU Indoor Tennis Courts.

It turned into a marathon day for the Abbey as the Crusaders defeated Tusculum 4-1 before dropping a close 4-2 decision to LMU.

Belmont Abbey is now 8-6 following Saturday's results.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Belmont Abbey 4, Tusculum 1
  • The Crusaders put together a strong rally in singles play after losing two of the three doubles matches.
  • Marcus Bergelin got the rally started with the win at No. 6 singles followed by Cameron Simpson at No. 3.
  • Isaac Buerkle and Charlie Fremaux won at No. 2 and No. 4 singles to complete the win.
Lincoln Memorial 4, Belmont Abbey 2
  • The Crusaders were locked in a close battle with the Railsplitters.
  • The Abbey got off to a good start by taking two of the three doubles matches. Fremaux and Buerkle teamed up for a win at No. 1 doubles while Simpson and Jackson Korta won at No. 2.
  • In singles play, Simpson continued his good run of play with wins a straight set win at No. 2.
  • LMU won matches at No. 1, 3 and 4 and it wasn't until the third-set tiebreaker at No. 6 singles that decided the match.
Other matches that the Belmont Abbey men's tennis team had scheduled for Saturday at Presbyterian and Pfeiffer were postponed due to inclement weather.
Those matches will be postponed for a later date.

UP NEXT
  • After a busy stretch to begin the season, the Crusaders will be off for a week before splitting the squad with two matches next Saturday.
  • One group will host West Virginia Wesleyan while another group will travel to face Davidson.
  • The matches are scheduled for 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. starts, respectively.
