Brielle George finished with a career-high 12 points and 12 rebounds for her fourth double-double of the season as the Belmont Abbey women's basketball team hosted Shorter Wednesday evening at the Wheeler Center.
Despite the strong effort, the Crusaders dropped their first conference contest, 64-60, to the Hawks.
With the result, Belmont Abbey is now 10-3 overall and 5-1 in Conference Carolinas play. Shorter is now 5-7 overall and 3-2 in the league.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Both teams were locked in a battle early but the Crusaders were sparked by a 9-2 run to close the first quarter with a 14-8 lead.
- George scored four points in the second quarter and Belmont Abbey took a four-point lead into halftime thanks to 3-pointers from Sofia McNabb and Isabella Martin.
- Kallie Lusk and Brielle George scored the opening baskets of the second half as Belmont Abbey took its largest lead of the game at eight points.
- Shorter rallied to tie the game at 34-34 entering the fourth quarter.
- The Hawks shot 73.3 percent from the field in the final quarter compared to 45 percent for the Abbey.
- The Crusaders finished with 36 rebounds on the evening.
- McNabb added eight points and seven rebounds off the bench while Leigha Dennison also had eight points.
- The Crusaders finished with 11 steals and made a season-high eight 3-pointers.
- Riley James had a team-high five assists.
