Late-Inning Rally Lifts Abbey Baseball Past Barton to Open Conference Tourney

GASTONIA, N.C. — Carter DuHaime finished with four hits and Drew Stegura pitched four innings of scoreless relief as the Belmont Abbey baseball team opened its Conference Carolinas Tournament with an 8-5 win over Barton Thursday night at CaroMont Health Park.

The No. 3 seed Crusaders trailed 5-4 entering the bottom of the seventh before tying the game in the seventh and scoring three runs in the eighth to complete the comeback.

Stegura allowed just one hit over four innings and struck out three to improve to 8-3 on the season. He entered in relief of starter Spencer Cipro, who pitched five-plus innings and allowed one earned run.

With Thursday's result, Belmont Abbey improves to 35-14 on the season while Barton is now 29-21.

  • Stegura retired the Bulldogs in order in the seventh inning and pulled even thanks to a sacrifice fly from Jack Boyles.
  • After a one-out single, Stegura also struck out the final two batters that he faced in the eighth to keep the game even.
  • Belmont Abbey jumped ahead thanks to four straight singles with RBI singles from Whitaker and DuHaime putting the Abbey ahead.
  • The scoring was capped off when Justin Herrera reached on an error from Barton with the bases loaded to make it 8-5.
