Crusaders Win Two Matches to Earn Spot in Semifinal Round

SUMTER, S.C. — The Belmont Abbey women's tennis team earned a spot in the semifinals of the Conference Carolinas Tournament with a pair of victories at the Palmetto Tennis Center.

The Crusaders defeated Converse 4-0 in the completion of the first round match that was suspended due to inclement weather and followed that up with a 4-2 victory over No. 4 seed Mount Olive in the quarterfinals Friday afternoon.

Against the Valkyries, the Crusaders took two of the three doubles matches and won at No. 3, No. 4 and No. 5 singles to take the match. Alexis Burkhalter earned wins at No. 3 doubles and No. 5 singles to help the Abbey.

Against the Trojans, Belmont Abbey had to rally after dropping the doubles point. Kaitlin Nguyen, Hanley Riner and Mackenzie McCarthy earned wins at No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4 singles. It was Leilany Sanchez who earned the clinching point at No. 6 to punch Belmont Abbey's ticket into the semifinals.

The Crusaders improve to 16-17 overall with the two wins.
