BELMONT, N.C. -- Ava Elkins homered and doubled during a four-RBI day, but Augusta swept Belmont Abbey in college softball doubleheader at Crusader Field on Tuesday. The Jaguars won the opener 8-5 before taking the nightcap 11-1 in five innings.
With the the results, the Crusaders fall to 12-6 overall, while Augusta improves to 14-11.
THE OPENER
- Elkins homered and doubled, while Sami Kirk had a pair of singles.
- McKenna Meadors, Casey Laing and Ivy Holley also hit safely in the contest.
- Belmont Abbey fell behind 5-0 over the first two innings but later rallied to 6-5 in the fifth.
- Elkins got the Crusaders on the board with her solo homer in the fourth before Holley later followed with an RBI single as a pinch-hitter.
- After the Jags went up 6-2 in the top of the sixth, Elkins had a two-run double and Laing followed with a double to cut the gap down to one.
- Lilly Hartsell (6-1) suffered her first defeat of the year. She allowed five runs on six hits over 2.0 innings. She struck out one.
THE NIGHTCAP
- The Crusaders registered five hits, with just one for extra bases -- a double by pinch-hitter Peyton Colbert.
- Kirk picked up her third hit of the day, while Meadors recorded her second.
- Sage Farmer and Ruthie Allen also hit safely.
- The contest started off with a four-run first four Augusta, but The Abbey scored one and loaded the bases with two outs in its first frame. However, that ended the scoring for the home team.
- Kayla Milam (1-4) took the loss, giving up four runs and getting just one out.
UP NEXT
- Belmont Abbey returns to action next Tuesday when it hosts Seton Hill in a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
- The Crusaders were scheduled to host Shaw tomorrow, but the contests have been postponed due to impending weather.
