Phillips, Colbert Key Split with Seton Hill

BELMONT, N.C. -- Maddie Phillips went 4-for-6 with six runs batted in and Peyton Colbert delivered a two-out walk-off single, leading Belmont Abbey to a split of a softball doubleheader with Seton Hill Tuesday afternoon at Crusader Field. The Crusaders dropped the opener 8-2 before rebounded with a 12-11 win in eight innings in the nightcap.

With the split, The Abbey sits at 13-7 overall, while the Griffins stand at 9-5.

THE OPENER
  • Phillips was 1-for-2 with a sacrifice, driving in both Crusader runs. Her squeeze bunt in the first opened the scoring, then she homered to left in the fourth.
  • Sage Farmer and McKenna Meadors each had two hits in the contest.
  • Lily Hartsell took the loss to fall to 6-2. She allowed four runs on five hits in 2.0 innings pitched.
THE NIGHTCAP
  • Phillips went 3-for-4 with four runs batted in. She tied the game with a two-out double in the bottom of the seventh, while delivering a two-run single during a five-run fourth and and an RBI single in the fifth.
  • Three other players had three hits at the plate -- Colbert, Ivy Holly and Trinity Wall. All three scored a pair of runs, with Holley and Wall driving in two runs apiece.
  • Belmont Abbey trailed 8-2 after SHU stuck for six runs in the fourth, but struck back with five of its own to make the score 8-6. A three-run fifth put the Crusaders ahead 9-8, but the Griffins answered with three in the next at-bat for an 11-9 advantage.
  • In the seventh, Wall doubled with one out, then scored on Vicky Lott's two-out pinch hit single. Phillips followed with a double to forced extra innings.
  • Lilly Hartsell -- the fourth pitcher of the game -- stranded runners on second and third in the top of the eighth before Colbert's single to right completed the rally.
  • Hartsell improved to 7-2 with the win.
