BELMONT, N.C. — The Belmont Abbey softball team celebrated six seniors on Senior Day with a doubleheader against No. 4 Francis Marion Saturday afternoon at Crusader Field, but came up short in both contests. The Abbey fell 8-0 in five innings in the first game and dropping a 2-1 heartbreaker in the second game of the twinbill.
The six seniors,

Sadler Gwynn,
McKenna Meadors,
Maddie Phillips,
Ruthie Allen and
Dorothy Wunderlich, were all honored in a pregame ceremony.
With Saturday's result, Belmont Abbey is now 16-18 overall and 3-9 in the league. Francis Marion is 33-3 overall and 13-1 in the league.
THE OPENER
- The Crusaders were held in check in the first three innings going down in order.
- Francis Marion scored a run in the first inning on a sacrifice fly and two more in the third.
- Casey Laing and Payton Colbert both drew walks to reach base for the Abbey.
- Belmont Abbey did not record a hit in the opener.
- McKenna Meadors took the loss for the Abbey.
THE NIGHTCAP
- Francis Marion got the game's first run on the board despite a double play in the first inning.
- After a scoreless first two innings, the Crusaders got on the board thanks to an RBI groundout from Casey Laing.
- Sage Farmer scored after reaching with a one-out single.
- Both teams were in a close battle before a go-ahead home run from FMU in the seventh.
- Lauren Huebsch was able to record the second hit of the day for the Crusaders in the seventh but the Abbey was not able to complete the rally.
- Lillian Hartsell allowed just one earned run and four hits and recorded two strikeouts for the loss.
