Solid Pitching Leads Crusaders to Sweep of King

BELMONT, N.C. -- Lilly Hartsell and Kayla Milam limited King to just nine hits and one run over 14 innings, leading Belmont Abbey to a doubleheader sweep over the Tornado 3-1 and 2-0 in Conference  Carolinas softball action Tuesday afternoon at Crusader Field. Hartsell threw a complete-game in the opener, then picked up the save in Milam's victory in the nightcap.

With the sweep, the sixth of the year, the Crusaders improve to 18-18 overall and 5-9 in league play, while King falls to 22-16, 9-5.

THE OPENER
  • Each team registered just four hits in the contest with Sage Farmer getting two for Belmont Abbey. Ivy Holley and Maddie Phillips also registered singles for the Crusaders.
  • The Abbey broke a scoreless tie in the fourth when Farmer's bloop single to left plated Phillips, who had singled to lead off the frame.
  • After the Tornado tied the score on a solo home run in the top of the sixth, BAC plated two runs their at-bat. A double steal attempt forced the tornado into an error, then Farmer again singled in Phillips for a 3-1 lead.
  • Hartsell earned the win to improve to 9-8. She struck out five against just one walk in the four-hitter.
THE NIGHTCAP
  • McKenna Meadors led the five-hit attack with a pair of singles, while Farmer gained her third hit of the afternoon. A single by Casey Laing and a pinch-hit by Vicky Lott rounded out the offense.
  • Similar to the first game, the teams were scoreless into the late innings. In the fifth, the Crusaders took advantage of two King errors for two runs. Laing singled to right for and RBI and then another double steal try resulted in the second unearned run.
  • Milam (2-4) walked one and struck out one, while scattering five hits. She worked out of jams in the second, third and fourth innings, stranding a pair of runners in each. She retired the side in the sixth before Hartsell set down three batters in order in the seventh for her third save.
UP NEXT
  • After wrapping up an eight-game homestand, Belmont Abbey now takes to the road for eight in a row.
  • The first of the four doubleheaders is scheduled for Saturday at Erskine.
