Cipro's Career-High 10 Strikeouts Lifts Abbey Baseball To Series Win at Erskine

DUE WEST, S.C. — Spencer Cipro recorded a career-high 10 strikeouts in a complete game as the Belmont Abbey baseball team took the series from Erskine in a doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Grier Field.

The Crusaders took the opening game of the doubleheader 6-1 before dropping a 7-1 contest in the series finale to the Flying Fleet.

Cipro allowed just one run on seven hits in his fourth complete game of the season as he earned his sixth win of the season.

Joe Whitaker finished with three hits on the day for the Crusaders offensively.

Belmont Abbey is now 20-11 overall and 11-7 in league play after taking its fifth conference series of the season. Erskine is 15-15 overall and 5-10 in the league.  

GAME 1
  • The Crusaders struck first thanks to a sacrifice fly from Caleb Burr in the first inning.
  • Carter DuHaime extended the Abbey lead to 2-0 in the second inning with his third home run of the year.
  • The Crusaders capitalized on two Erskine errors in the third innining for two more runs.
  • Whitaker scored after a throwing error on a flyout while Burr scored on an RBI double from Michael Fattore.
  • Erskine answered with a run in the third inning but were unable to bring anyone else across in the frame.
  • The Fleet put two runners on base in the fourth but an inning-ending strikeout from Cipro ended the rally.
  • The Crusaders turned a double play in the fifth to turn away Erskine and kept the Fleet scoreless in the sixth.
  • Belmont Abbey took advantage of another Erskine error in the seventh when Jack Boyles reaced on an error and stole three bases to another Abbye Run.
  • Whitaker reached on a walk and later scored on a passed ball.
  • Cipro closed out the game with a final strikeout to secure the win.
GAME 2
  • Whitaker led the game off with a single but it was Erskine who jumped ahead with two runs in the second and three in the third.
  • After another Fleet run in the fifth, the Crusaders got on the board in the sixth thanks to an RBI from Ethan McLain.
  • McLain's RBI drove in Burr, who led the inning off with a triple.
  • Erskine added one more run in the seventh to cap the scoring.
  • Seth Edgerton took the loss for the Abbey in four innings in his start  while Thomas Paxton and Layton Dickerson combined to pitch the final four innings.
UP NEXT
  • Belmont Abbey will head on the road to face Catawba for a second time this season in a mid-week game Tuesday at Atrium Health Ballpark in Kannapolis.
  • First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
