BELMONT, N.C. -- Casey Laing hit a a two-run walk-off home run with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, capping a five-run rally and earning a split for Belmont Abbey in a Conference Carolina doubleheader with North Greenville. The Trailblazers won the opener 3-0, while the Crusaders took the nightcap 5-4.
With the split, The Abbey improves to 14-10 overall and 1-3 in league play, while North Greenville stands at 15-11, 3-3.
THE OPENER
- Belmont Abbey registered three hits in the contest -- a double by Trinity Wall and singles by Sage Farmer and Sami Kirk.
- The teams were scoreless after two innings when the Trailblazers jumped up 1-0 on a solo home run in the third.
- RBI singles in the sixth and seventh capped NGU's scoring.
- Lilly Hartsell struck out three, but took the complete-game loss to fall to 7-4.
THE NIGHTCAP
- Laing batted 3-for-4 with a run scored and two driven in. She doubled in the second, then hit a 3-2 pitch over the wall in left center to complete the comeback.
- Vicki Lott drove in two runs with a one-out pinch-hit single to cut a 4-0 deficit in half. Sammy Kirk plated the third run on a sacrifice fly.
- NGU opened the score with two runs in the first and added two more in the seventh.
- McKenna Meadors scattered 11 hits in the complete-game victory. She struck out one in giving up four runs (three earned).Â
