BELMONT, N.C. — Carter DuHaime hit a pinch-hit walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth inning as the Belmont Abbey baseball team split a doubleheader with Francis Marion Saturday afternoon at Abbey Yard.
The Crusaders dropped the first game 5-1 before earning the split with a 6-5 victory in the nightcap. Belmont Abbey rallied to win the finale after allowing two runs in the ninth inning to earn the win.
DuHaime finished with three hits on the day while
Thomas Paxton was credited with the win.
With Saturday's results, Belmont Abbey is now 16-10 overall while Francis Marion is 19-8. Both teams are now 9-6 in Conference Carolinas play.
GAME 1
- Both teams got off to a quick start offensively with home runs in the first inning.
- Joe Whitaker opened the Crusader scoring with a lead-off home run.
- Francis Marion took the lead back with a solo home run in the third and a two-run home run in the fourth.
- The Patriots added another run in the seventh inning off of a double steal.
- Caleb Burr and DuHaime each had two hits in the opener.
- Spencer Cipro took the loss despite striking out four in seven innings of work.
GAME 2
- After a scoreless first two innings, Francis Marion got on the board first with RBI singles in the third and fourth innings.
- Burr pulled the Crusaders even with a two-run home run in the fourth.
- Francis Marion went ahead in the sixth with a sacrifice fly.
- Belmont Abbey took advantage of a Francis Marion error as Jackson Risk put the Crusaders ahead with a two-run home run to right field to make it 4-3.
- Seth Edgerton got the start for Belmont Abbey and struck out three and allowed three runs in six innings of work.
- The Patriots captured the lead in the ninth inning with a pair of solo home runs.
- After Burr led the ninth inning off with a walk, he moved to second on a wild pitch and later scored on an RBI single from Risk.
- The Crusaders loaded the bases thanks to a pinch-hit double from Connor Powell and an intentional walk to Jack Boyles.
- It set the stage for DuHaime, who drove the ball into left field for the game-winning hit to score Risk.
