First-Inning Surge Lifts Abbey Baseball to Third Straight Win

BELMONT, N.C. — The Belmont Abbey baseball team used a torrid 10-run first inning to set the tone and earn a 19-10 victory over Lander Tuesday evening at Abbey Yard.

The 10 runs is the most in a single inning this season for Belmont Abbey, who also recorded a season-high 20 hits in the win.

Joe Whitaker was one of three Crusaders with three hits on the day while five Crusaders recorded two hits. Additionally, Connor Tucker and Jackson Risk both hit triples and drove in three runs each.

Belmont Abbey is now 15-8 on the season after winning its third game in a row. Lander is now 16-7 on the year.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Lander got on the board with an RBI single in the first inning but Belmont Abbey starting pitcher Joseph Hackmann limited the Bearcats to just the one run and got out of a bases-loaded jam.
  • Seven of the first nine Belmont Abbey batters recorded a hit, highlighted by a two-run triple from Connor Tucker. Tucker would later score in the inning on an RBI triple from Risk.
  • The Crusaders kept the offensive attack going with six runs in the third inning starting with an RBI double from Tucker and capped with a two-run single from Josh Wilson.
  • Lander chipped away in the next three innings before Belmont Abbey plated a run in the sixth off a Michael Fattore sacrifice fly.
  • Belmont Abbey capped off the scoring with two more runs in the seventh: the first off a double steal from Brady Emerson and an RBI double from Risk.
  • Layton Dickerson earned his first win for Belmont Abbey after recording the final two outs of the sixth inning.
  • Belmont Abbey pitching accounted for 10 strikeouts on the night.
