TIGERVILLE, S.C. — Riley James and
Abigail Crain finished in double figures scoring and
Peyton Nation was one point shy of a double-double as the Belmont Abbey women's basketball team pulled away for a 55-40 win over North Greenville Wednesday evening at Hayes Gymnasium.
James finished with a team-best 13 points to go with six rebounds and five assists. Crain added 11 points to go with five steals, three rebounds and two assists. Nation had nine points and 10 rebounds for Belmont Abbey in the win.
With Wednesday's results, Belmont Abbey improves to 18-4 overall, 12-2 in conference play and 5-0 in the Northwest Division. North Greenville is now 5-15 overall, 5-9 in the league and 3-3 in the division.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Both teams looked to find their shot early in the first quarter as the Crusaders' first four points came from the free throw line.
- James accounted for the first made field goal for the Abbey to give the team an early 6-2 lead.
- The Crusaders had the final six points in the quarter capped off by a 3-pointer from Cate Schieber.
- NGU started the second quarter on a 5-0 run before another Schieber three pushed the lead back to four. Belmont Abbey led 28-19 at the half.
- NGU accounted for the first four points of the second half before James stopped the run with her basket coming with just over seven minutes left in the third quarter.
- Belmont Abbey used the outside shot to extend the lead and pull away with a 3-pointer from James and two from Madison Lusk.
- Crain's jumper with under six minutes left in the fourth quarter gave the Crusaders their largest lead of the game at 51-31.
- The five steals from Crain matches her season and career high from November 16th at Anderson.
- Belmont Abbey had 11 steals, the eighth time that the team had reached that mark this season.
- Valeria Batista added two blocks on defense for the Abbey.
- The Crusaders did not trail at any point in the contest. It is the third time this season that Belmont Abbey has led wire-to-wire.
