Hartsell Earns Win, Save in Sweep of Coker

HARTSVILLE, S.C. -- Freshman Lilly Hartsell picked up a win and a save Friday as Belmont Abbey swept Coker 3-1 and 6-5 in college softball action. Hartsell threw a complete game with eight strikeouts in the opener before fanning two of the three batters she faced the final inning of game two.

With the wins, the Crusaders improve to 12-4 overall, while the Cobras fall to 7-11.

THE OPENER
  • Five players hit safely in the contest with Trinity Wall registering the only extra-base hit. Sage Farmer, McKenna Meadors, Sami Kirk and Ava Elkins recorded the other four.
  • The Abbey got on the board first in the fifth with a two-out RBI single by Elkins, plating Kirk who safely led off the frame with a knock to center. Wall followed with a double to left center that brought home Elkins for a 2-0 lead.
  • Kirk's sacrifice fly in the sixth drove in Farmer with the third run.
  • Hartsell (6-0) earned the win, scattering six hits, all singles. She did not walk a batter, while fanning eight.
THE NIGHTCAP
  • Belmont Abbey again tallied five hits, but four went for extra bases -- Maddie Phillips homered and doubled, while Kennedy Teasley also went yard. A double by Lily Garnett-Brown and a single by Wall, rounded out the offensive attack.
  • Teasley's leadoff home run in the third started the scoring, but the Cobras answered with two in the bottom of the inning. A sacrifice fly by Kirk and Phillips' blast -- her first of the season -- put the Crusaders back up in the fourth, but Coker used five hits in the fifth inning to move back in front, 5-4.
  • But in the sixth, The Abbey took the lead for good when Phillips doubled home Elkins and scored two outs later on an error.
  • Hartsell returned to the mound with two runners on in the seventh and got two strikeouts and a groundout for her second save.
  • Meadors, the third of four pitchers, earned the win to improve to 3-0. She allowed one hit and a walk, while striking out three, in 1.1 innings.

UP NEXT
  • Belmont Abbey returns home for three doubleheaders over the next 11 days.
  • The Crusaders start the string Tuesday against Augusta with a 1 p.m. start at Crusader Field.
