MARS HILL, N.C. -- Kennedy Teasley's two-run home run in the opener, combined with a three-hit shutout by
Lilly Hartsell, lifted Belmont Abbey to a split with Mars Hill in collegiate softball action Tuesday afternoon. The Crusaders won the opener 5-0 before dropping the nightcap 3-1.
With the split, The Abbey now stands at 9-4, while the Mountain Lions are an even 7-7.
THE OPENER
- The Abbey scored two runs in the second and two more in the third for an early 4-0 lead. The final tally came in the fifth.
- McKenna Meadors had two of Belmont Abbey's seven hits, including a run-scoring single in the third.
- Teasley opened the scoring with a two-run home run in the second inning.
- Sage Farmer, Lily Garnett-Brown, Maddie Phillips and Sami Kirk also hit safely during the contest
- Hartsell (4-0) pitched the complete-game shutout, allowing just three hits. She walked two and struck out five.
THE NIGHTCAP
- Farmer led a four-hit attack with a double and a single.
- Kirk and Trinity Wall also doubled.
- The Abbey broke a scoreless tie in the fourth when Wall's gapper to left center brought home Teasley, but a Mars Hill home run, sacrifice fly and RBI single in the bottom of the frame accounted for the remaining scoring.
- Kayla Milam took the hard-luck loss to fall to 1-4. She allowed just one unearned run over 3.1 innings.
UP NEXT
- Belmont Abbey returns to the road on Friday for its third doubleheader of the week.
- The Crusaders travel to Hartsville, S.C. to face Coker at 1 p.m.
