BELMONT, N.C. — The Belmont Abbey baseball team returned home to face No. 17 Catawba to begin a busy week of facing ranked opponents Tuesday at Abbey Yard.
The Crusaders and Indians battled back and forth but a late-inning surge lifted Catawba to a 26-8 win over the Abbey.
Matthew Fattore and
Caleb Burr each had two hits for the Abbey while
Seth Edgerton went 5.1 innings in his first career start.
Belmont Abbey is now 10-5 after Tuesday's game while Catawba is 11-4.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Both teams traded runs in the first inning as Fattore got the Crusaders on the board with an RBI double.
- The two teams added runs in the third and it was Fattore who delivered an RBI double.
- Burr's leadoff home run in the fourth gave the Crusaders a 3-2 lead.
- Catawba took the lead in the sixth but the Crusaders pulled even thanks to consecutive runs batted in from Todd Velotta and Jack Boyles.
- The Indians broke the game open with 11 runs in the seventh inning followed by 10 more over the final two frames.
- Brady Emerson drove in two runs in the ninths and later scored on a wild pitch in the inning.
