MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. — Olivia Carlino tallied seven goals and the Belmont Abbey women's lacrosse team used a run of nine unanswered goals to earn a 16-9 upset win over No. 17 Mount Olive Saturday afternoon at the Ray McDonald Complex. Saturday's game marked the Conference Carolinas opener for the Crusaders.
Carlino was one of six Crusaders to finish with multiple points and one of four with multiple goals on the day.
Katelyn Miller had four goals for the Abbey while
Triniti Cassidy and
Grace Ridge each had two for Belmont Abbey.
Summer Eddinger made nine saves in goal and six ground balls defensively.
It is the first win over the Trojans since April 28, 2018 when the Abbey defeated UMO in the semifinals of the Conference Carolinas tournament. Additionally, the win also snapped a 44-game conference winning streak for Mount Olive.
Belmont Abbey is 1-1 overall and 1-0 in the league while Mount Olive is also 1-1 both overall and in the league.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Miller got Belmont Abbey on the board first with the opening goal less than three minutes into the contest.
- After UMO took a 2-1 lead, Carlino scored her first goal to pull even at 2-2.
- The Trojans led 5-4 after the first 15 minutes of play.
- Abbey McCarthy pulled Belmont Abbey even at 5-5 with the opening goal of the second quarter.
- After UMO pushed back ahead at 6-5, the Crusaders started its surge with four Carlino goals to go into the half with a 9-6 lead.
- Belmont Abbey kept the roll going into the third quarter with 5 more goals to take an eight-goal advantage into the final quarter.
- UMO scored the first goal of the fourth quarter but goals from Miller and Carlino gave the Abbey the insurance it needed.
- The Crusaders held a 33-27 advantage in shots and 27-18 in shots on goal.
- Belmont Abbey had 33 ground balls with six each from Carlino, Cassidy and Eddinger.
- Kacey Kubarewicz led the Crusaders with six draw controls while Cassidy had five.
- Belmont Abbey had 19 caused turnovers with Cassidy, Addyson Greenspan, Elizabeth Hommel and Ridge had three each.
- The Crusaders had nine assists with eight different players.
