Furious Second-Half Rally Lifts Crusaders Past Bobcats in Overtime

BELMONT, N.C. — The Belmont Abbey women's basketball team picked up its sixth straight win thanks to a furious second-half rally as the Crusaders earned a 78-77 overtime victory over Lees-McRae Tuesday night at the Wheeler Center.
 
The Crusaders trailed by as many as 18 points in the second half and were able to tie the game late in regulation to force extra basketball.
 
Kallie Lusk led Belmont Abbey in scoring with 19 points on the night with three rebounds and three assists while Leigha Dennison and Brielle George both recorded double-doubles. Dennison finished with 12 points, 10 assists and five steals while George had 12 points and 11 rebounds for her second straight double-double.
 
Ava Fulkerson had her best game as a Crusader finishing with 12 points off the bench.
 
With the win, Belmont Abbey improves to 8–1 overall, 4–0 in Conference Carolinas play and 3-0 in Northwest Division play. Lees-McRae is now 6-4 overall,  3-2 in the league and 1-2 in the division.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Kallie Lusk accounted for the first six points of the contest for the Crusaders.
  • The Crusaders got within two points early in the second quarter but a hot-shooting Bobcats held an 11-point lead at halftime.
  • A 9-0 run by Lees-McRae pushed the lead to 18 points in the third quarter.
  • A 10-2 run by the Crusaders helped chip away back within 10 points.
  • Belmont Abbey trailed by 10 points with 5:30 left in regulation but an 8-0 run got the Crusaders back within one possession highlighted by a 3-pointer by Fulkerson.
  • Trailing by four with under a minute to go, Dennison made two baskets to tie the game and force overtime.
  • A pair of free throws in overtime from Kallie Lusk gave Belmont Abbey its first lead of the game at 74-73.
  • Riley James and Leigha Dennison accounted for the final four points of the game for Belmont Abbey.
  • The Crusaders made a pair of defensive stops in the final 15 seconds to hold on for the win.
  • Belmont Abbey shot 58.1 percent in the second half of regulation to force overtime.
  • The Crusaders had a 46-26 advantage in rebounding.
